There’s no doubt that advanced analytics has become an integral component for business decision making today and the healthcare industry is no exception. The problem is that we can sometimes be hypnotized by buzzwords like “big data” and “predictive analytics” and lose sight of the real goal of an effective analytics strategy, according to the post. When that happens, organizations can end up throwing dollars and investment assets at a program without investing the necessary time and thought up front to build a solid strategy for their analytics initiatives.

As healthcare business leaders responsible for data advanced analytics projects, we need to be sure that every dollar we invest returns real value in improved clinical outcomes, reduced costs, or enhanced patient satisfaction. Ultimately we need to make sure that every action is an incremental step toward the longer term goal of being an advanced analytics healthcare provider. To accomplish this, we need to do more than just consume the data that patients generate. We also have to find a way to use that data to improve patient outcomes.

That doesn’t happen just by pumping big money into an analytics program but instead requires reasoned thought and a methodical step-by-step process. At the University of Kansas Hospital (KU), we continue to build our analytics program to leverage patient data to drive improvement. Based on our lessons learned, here is one approach that is helping us get the most out of our data advanced analytics program. Click here to continue >>
