Portland, Maine-based MaineHealth sent letters to 531 patients indicating they were dead. They were very much alive.

The nine-hospital system said an error in its computer system Oct. 20 caused the estate vendor letters to be generated and mailed to the patients, saying they were dead and informing their next of kin how to resolve their estates.

MaineHealth sincerely regrets this error and has sent apology letters to all patients who have been affected,” a health system spokesperson told Becker’s. “At no time were these patients listed as deceased in their medical records and the issue has been fully resolved.”
