Evansville, Ind.-based Deaconess Health System has added a tool to its MyChart patient portal that allows users to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. The update has led more than 1,000 patients to sign up since August.

The tool gives Deaconess the sixth-highest registration total among U.S. health systems using MyChart, according to a Nov. 3 news release from the health system. Patients can use the feature to register with the National Donate Life Registry for transplant, research or education purposes. The registration is not visible to clinicians and uses existing patient data to streamline the process.

Jared Antczak, chief digital transformation officer at Deaconess, said in the release that the integration aims to make registration simple and accessible through the patient portal.

Other health systems have rolled out similar MyChart integrations in recent months. New Orleans-based LCMC Health and Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital both added organ donor registration tools to their patient portals this year, becoming the first systems in their respective states to do so.
