5 ways AI can improve provider, patient experiences

Artificial intelligence technology examines data and provides insights into hospital and health system operations. This technology not only can save physicians time, but also improve the patient experience and the patient-provider relationship overall.

This is what Jared Pelo, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer of Nuance Communications, concluded during a Nov. 12 session at the Becker’s CEO + CFO Virtual Event.

During the session, Dr. Pelo discussed five ways AI can improve the patient and provider experience.

1. AI can reduce physician burnout. Dr. Pelo said Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience, an AI-powered voice-enabled solution, captures the conversation between the physician and patient, records it, and sends it to Nuance’s AI cloud. “And then it automatically writes a patient note, a patient’s summary that the physician is able to sign off on within the EHR,” he noted. “And this is, from my own experience as a provider, a huge benefit” in terms of reducing provider burnout by allowing the physician to spend more time at home and less time doing administrative work.

2. AI can increase accuracy, operating efficiency and throughput. By using AI to capture physician-patient conversations, the accuracy of clinical documentation is improved, Dr. Pelo said. This is because the documentation is being built off of the actual recording of the conversation rather than the physician’s recollection of what happened hours ago or days ago. “We know that because of this, you’re able to optimize your clinic flow because the physician is able to move faster,” said Dr. Pelo. “They’re not stuck documenting between patients. You’re able to increase the operational efficiency and the throughput.”

3. AI can improve provider and patient satisfaction. This has been Nuance’s experience with its Dragon Ambient eXperience technology. Dr. Pelo said physicians have given the technology high scores on their own satisfaction, and patients perceive physicians are spending more time with them because physicians are able to sit down, be with patients and connect with patients in meaningful ways when when they have more face to face time and eye contact .

4. AI can accelerate the revenue cycle. AI helps physicians complete clinical documentation faster and more efficiently, which means hospitals and health systems have a better chance of receiving timely reimbursement. Dr. Pelo said, “We know that notes being completed accurately and timely accelerates the revenue cycle.”

5. AI can be applied to all clinical settings. Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience technology is innovated by Nuance and Microsoft and built on one secure cloud platform and can be used in all clinical settings. This makes the technology accessible for every hospital and ambulatory clinics, no matter the size or geographic location, said Dr. Pelo.
