Neal Sample, the company’s third CIO in just over a year, has his work cut out for him as internal shake ups and key manager exits have lowered morale, according to the report. The previous CIO’s vision for the department focused on hiring engineering and AI experts while diverting resources from project managers and enterprise architects, according to the report.

Earlier this year, Ginger Graham, who was briefly interim CEO, said during its quarterly earnings call the company will need artificial intelligence and other new technologies to drive efficiency and forecast pharmacy demand accurately.

The Journal also noted Walgreens has technical debt, further complicating the transformation. Analysts told the Journal Mr. Sample’s ability to obtain trust within the department will be essential to “reshape the IT organization.’
