AI Visualize had sued Nuance and Mach7 Technologies in Delaware district court, claiming their 3D imaging technology had violated its patents. All three claim to have a technology that allows healthcare providers to receive, store and view large 3D medical scans on low-bandwidth web portals.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed with the lower court that the “asserted claims are patent ineligible because they are directed to an abstract idea and fail to transform that abstract idea into patent-eligible subject matter,” according to the April 4 ruling.
Microsoft acquired Nuance, which provides artificial intelligence and other software to health systems, in 2022 for $19.7 billion. Mach7 Technologies is a medical imaging company.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Becker’s that Nuance did not have anything to share on the topic. Mach7 did not respond to a request for comment, while AI Visualize could not be reached.
