The Novato, Calif.-based Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Google and the San Francisco hospital have created a genomic association study to develop a genetic biological clock called eyeAge that can identify dozens of diseases, according to the March 30 story. Biological age measures how old a person’s cells are based on such factors as inflammation and stress.
Google has highly calibrated deep learning machines that can “sense even the slightest change or anomaly in the eye that may not be otherwise visible to humans,” the story noted.
“This type of imaging could be really valuable in tracking the efficacy of interventions aimed at slowing the aging process,” the Buck Institute’s Pankaj Kapahi, PhD, told the news outlet.
