Amazon’s One Medical is leveraging AI to ease the workload on physicians, Politico reported Dec. 4.

Sunita Mishra, MD, chief medical officer at Amazon Health Services, told Politico that One Medical uses AI to process and extract key insights from patient health records — particularly when the data comes from outside its 15 health system partnerships. This ensures that physicians have a complete and actionable picture of their patients’ health without the added administrative workload.

“We’ve been really proactive in including our clinicians as we’re developing these tools,” Dr. Mishra told the publication. “Several are embedded in our product teams. That helps us with engagement because doctors feel excited when they get to be part of building the future of healthcare, but it also helps us with quality control.”

To measure AI’s impact, One Medical tracks physician workloads, such as the number of unresolved tasks in provider inboxes — a critical indicator of after-hours work, or “pajama time,” which strongly correlates with burnout.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mishra said she sees AI as a game-changer in care coordination, envisioning tools that can provide providers with relevant resources at their fingertips, reducing the time spent searching for information outside health system networks.
