Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed will break ground Nov. 6 on a two-hospital campus that incorporates acute care and mental health services, The News & Observer reported Oct. 13.
Here is what to know:
1. The Garner, N.C.-based “whole health campus” will include a 45-bed acute care hospital and a 150-bed mental health hospital called the WakeMed Mental Health & Well-Being Hospital.
2. The hospital will integrate physical and mental health services. More than 1,500 patients a month go to WakeMed emergency departments and hospitals seeking mental healthcare. Only about half of them need inpatient psychiatric care.
“We as human beings embody mental, physical and spiritual health needs,
” Micah Krempasky, MD, chief medical officer of WakeMed Mental Health & Well-Being, told the Observer. “And so to separate them into different hospitals, different campuses, different lines of treatment, just didn’t make sense.”
3. The hospitals are expected to begin accepting patients in early 2029.
4. The mental health hospital is expected to cost about $125 million, with $75 million coming from the system. The acute hospital is expected to cost about $214 million.
