UMMS preps launch of new hospital

The University of Maryland Medical System, based in Baltimore, is nearly ready to unveil its new Laurel (Md.) Medical Center.

The new 84,000-square-foot facility will open June 4, next to the aging facility it is intended to replace.

UM Laurel Medical Center — the new one — will be a "full health and wellness center" with the exception of inpatient care, Nathaniel Richardson Jr., CEO of University of Maryland Capital Region Health, told The Baltimore Banner. Patients needing a higher level of care will be transported to the UMMS Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, Md.: a model termed "hub and spoke."

Nearly 200 staff members will move to the new Laurel Medical Center from the existing facility, which transitioned to fully outpatient care in 2019.

Min Godwin, the Capital Region COO, told the Banner they expect to see 15 percent more emergency patients and double the current volume of surgical patients.
