The fire was extinguished less than an hour after it started, according to the Fire Department of New York. The department said one civilian had minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
The fire began on the seventh floor the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion, an 830,000-square-foot tower set to open in 2018. According to NBC New York, the fire department said the fire was accidentally caused by a spark from cutting metal.
The medical center’s Chief of Staff Joe Lhota said the hospital did not evacuate patients and continued normal operations, according to the report.
