NJ hospital awarded $8.4M for emergency generator

Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., was awarded $8.4 million to build a two-megawatt backup generator.

The funds were awarded as part of a joint project led by the state of New Jersey and the Public Service Electric and Gas Company. The Energy Strong project aims to fortify the state's electric and gas system to withstand extreme weather like Superstorm Sandy, which hit the state five years ago. Through the project, PSE&G is funneling funds to 260 of its "most critical" customers in the event of an emergency, such as police and fire stations and hospitals.

"Today, we are pleased to continue our partnership with Saint Peter's on the development of a combined heat and power project that will support the hospital during emergency situations," said PSE&G President and CEO David Daly, according to a press release.

Saint Peter's University Hospital expects the generator to be functional by 2018.
