The hospital decided to expand its NICU due to overcrowding in recent years. The expansion project added 23 NICU beds, for a total of 51.
“Over the past probably two years, there have been multiple times when we’ve had to transfer babies out because we didn’t have room for them,” Sue Korth MWH’s vice president and COO, told KMTV. “And we hope that in the future we won’t have to do that anymore. I get a little emotional about that.”
The expanded NICU is set to open Sept. 18.
