Tavares-based Florida Hospital Waterman will roughly double the size of its emergency department and add a patient tower housing pediatrics and women’s services, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

The $70 million initiative will add 23 beds to the hospital’s 35-bed ED. Florida Hospital Waterman’s ED was built more than 10 years ago and last year admitted 15,000 more patients than the unit is meant to accommodate.

In addition, the hospital’s Center for Women and Children will move to a proposed four-story patient tower. The center will include 24 beds designated for women’s services, inpatient pediatrics and labor and delivery, Orlando Sentinel reports.

Construction on the project is set to begin in July and reach completion by July 2019, the report states.
