Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston has received a $20 million grant from the Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Foundation to advance metastatic breast cancer research and care.
The grant represents the largest non-federal gift to support metastatic breast cancer research at Dana-Farber, according to a Nov. 24 cancer institute release.
The foundation was started by Eduardo Saverin, who cofounded Facebook, and his wife, Elaine, The Boston Globe reported Nov. 25.
Dana-Farber said the funds will support therapeutic innovation, clinical trials and research infrastructure. Specific initiatives include optimizing biomarker-driven studies, expanding data integration resources and applying artificial intelligence to personalize treatments and detect resistance mechanisms. The grant will also support liquid diagnostics and continue the Saverin Research Awards program.
The institute said it plans to analyze clinical, genomic and imaging data from more than 20,000 patients as part of this work.
