Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan collaborative model saves hospitals $597M

Five Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan sponsored-programs focused on collaborative care have saved 75 hospitals in Michigan a combined $597 million over a five-year period and also lowered complications and mortality rates.

From 2008 to 2012, savings were achieved through collaborative care programs focused on general surgery, cardiac and thoracic surgery, angioplasty and vascular interventions and bariatric surgery.

“This model enables competitors to work together as partners in large-scale efforts that reduce complications, improve patient outcomes, and significantly decrease unnecessary healthcare costs,” said Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO of BCBSM, in a news release.
