University Hospital and Rutgers Health broke ground Oct. 23 on the first phase of a multi-year campus redevelopment plan for their shared campus in Newark, N.J., a hospital spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s.
The project aims to expand access to care, education and research, and modernize facilities.
The groundbreaking focused on the first phase, which includes construction of the new administrative and clinical facility building. The structure, expected to open in 2027, will feature four floors of administrative office space, 11,000 square feet of clinical space for outpatient care and an 875-space parking garage, according to a hospital Facebook post.
In addition to the administrative building, construction is slated to begin next year on a medical office building, which will feature new medical facilities for outpatient clinics, physician offices and administrative services currently located in the doctors office center.
University Hospital Communications Director Samantha Lish said the estimated cost of the initial construction is $325 million, including demolition and site preparation for the administrative building and medical office building.
University Hospital, a 519-bed state-owned academic medical center, serves as the principal teaching hospital for all Rutgers Newark-based medical education, including Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers New Jersey Dental School.
Rutgers Health is an academic health center with eight schools, a behavioral health network, and 11 centers and institutes in Newark and New Brunswick, N.J.
