Dr. Bydon, a neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery, will step into the role July 1. He joins the academic health system from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, where he established the minimally invasive spine program in 2015 and a robotic spine program in 2018.

At UChicago Medicine, Dr. Bydon will oversee the department’s strategy and growth, focusing on faculty recruitment, expansion of clinical services across the health system, and growth of residency and fellowship programs.

UChicago Medicine launched the department of neurological surgery in 2021, transitioning from a neurosurgery section to reflect the organization’s goal of becoming a global leader in neurosurgical care, research and education. Bakthiar Yamini, MD, has served as interim chair since the department’s inception.
