48 healthcare layoffs so far in 2017

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review so far in 2017. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. South Shore Health eliminates 27 managerial, administrative jobs in cost-saving move
South Weymouth, Mass.-based South Shore Health System laid off 27 employees in management and administrative positions.

2. BCBS of North Carolina eliminates 165 jobs
Durham-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will lay off 165 customer service employees who were hired during the 2017 open enrollment period for ACA health plans.

3. Spaulding to lay off 35 employees in cost-cutting move
Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, part of Boston-based Partners HealthCare System, will lay off 35 employees, or less than 1 percent of the organization's total workforce.

4. Texas medical center lays off 6 employees
Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas, laid off six employees.

5. Louisiana specialty hospital cuts 14 jobs
Lafayette (La.) Surgical Specialty Hospital, a 20-bed physician-owned hospital, laid off 14 employees.

6. St. Mary's General Hospital to lay off 7 nurses, 13 medical techs
Passaic, N.J.-based St. Mary's General Hospital confirmed to Becker's Hospital Review plans to lay off less than 3 percent of its workforce, mainly in nonclinical positions.

7. Banner completes restructuring; eliminates chief administrative officer post
Phoenix-based Banner Health completed a restructuring process involving layoffs and consolidation or elimination of certain executive positions.

8. 20 laid off at Stamford Health amid projected revenue shortfall
Stamford (Conn.) Health laid off approximately 20 employees, or about 0.7 percent of its total workforce.

9. CHS divestiture results in 19 layoffs at Stringfellow Memorial
The Health Care Authority of the City of Anniston let go approximately 19 employees at Anniston, Ala.-based Stringfellow Memorial Hospital following its recent acquisition of the 125-bed hospital.

10. Care New England eliminates jobs at multiple hospitals
Providence, R.I.-based Care New England announced plans to cut jobs at multiple hospitals, with the majority being cut at its flagship Women & Infants Hospital.

11. UMass Medical School to lay off roughly 65 employees
Worcester-based University of Massachusetts Medical School announced plans to lay off approximately 65 employees after the school's Commonwealth Medicine division opted not to renew a contract providing preauthorization services to MassHealth.

12. Mid-Columbia Medical Center cuts 11 jobs
Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Ore., laid off 11 employees.

13. KentuckyOne Health to lay off about 150 employees
Louisville-based KentuckyOne Health announced plans to lay off about 150 employees, or roughly 1 percent of its total workforce.

14. UP Health System-Marquette eliminates dozens of jobs
UP Health System-Marquette (Mich.), a 307-bed specialty care hospital owned by Brentwood, Tenn.-based Duke LifePoint, cut a few dozen jobs.

15. Kentucky hospital cuts jobs, delays ER expansion as patient volume sags
Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Ky., announced plans to cut 61 jobs as it restructures operations.

16. Victor Valley Global Medical Center lays off 18 workers
Victorville, Calif.-based Victor Valley Global Medical Center laid off 18 employees.

17. CHI St. Alexius lays off another 25 employees
In its latest round of layoffs, CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, N.D., cut 25 employees.

18. Louisiana long-term care hospital to close by June 3
Ruston-based LifeCare Specialty Hospital of North Louisiana will shutter its facility and terminate all employees by June 3.

19. Trios Health cuts 95 FTEs to improve finances
Kennewick, Wash.-based Trios Health, part of the Kennewick Public Hospital District, is reducing its workforce through various measures, including layoffs.

20. CHI lays off 459 employees in Texas
Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives' Texas division laid off 459 employees and will leave 161 vacant positions unfilled.

21. PeaceHealth revises number of job cuts in Oregon to 271
Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth announced plans to cut 271 positions in Oregon, up from the 186 it initially anticipated.

22. Gila Regional Medical Center lays off 12 employees to save $1M
Silver City, N.M.-based Gila Regional Medical Center announced plans to lay off eight members of its "administrative and support" staff and four employees with the title of executive or director to save about $1 million.

23. Stanford Health Care revises number of layoffs to 123
Stanford (Calif.) Health Care cut 123 positions, down from the 168 it initially anticipated.

24. Banner physicians affected in latest round of system layoffs
Banner Health announced plans to lay off some physicians as the Phoenix-based system restructures operations.

25. ZirMed lays off 60 employees
Louisville, Ky.-based ZirMed, which provides cloud-based revenue cycle management solutions, announced plans to cut 60 positions from its total workforce of about 670 people.

26. St. John Health System lays off business office employees
St. John Health System in Tulsa, Okla., part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health, announced plans to lay off employees in its business office.

27. Shenandoah Medical Center cuts 14 positions
Shenandoah (Iowa) Medical Center laid off employees amid restructuring efforts.

28. Alabama hospital lays off 26 workers
Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro, Ala., laid off 26 employees.

29. Banner Health issues another round of layoffs as it restructures operations
Phoenix-based Banner Health announced plans to lay off more employees, including its top public relations executive, as it restructures operations.

30. Partners' hospitals to lay off employees as part of cost-cutting plan
North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass., which includes two campuses and is part of Boston-based Partners HealthCare, announced plans to lay off employees to help overcome financial losses.

31. Humana to cut unspecified number of jobs, top positions in Kentucky, Wisconsin
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana announced plans to lay off an undisclosed number of employees in Kentucky and Wisconsin as part of the insurer's growth strategy following its unsuccessful bid to merge with Aetna.

32. MDwise to lay off 79 employees in departure from Indiana Medicaid program
Indianapolis-based insurer MDwise announced plans to exit Indiana's Medicaid program at the end of March, affecting 79 workers.

33. Via Christi Health revises number of layoffs
Wichita, Kan.-based Via Christi Health said in February it is laying off less than 25 employees as it transitions parts of its billing cycle to national vendor R1 RCM. Billing employees affected by the layoffs are in Wichita, Manhattan and Pittsburg, Kan.

34. Hennepin County Medical Center to cut 131 full-time jobs
Minneapolis-based Hennepin County Medical Center announced plans to cut the equivalent of 131 full-time jobs through layoffs.

35. UnitedHealth Group to lay off 119 Optum employees
Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group announced plans to lay off 119 workers at its Optum offices in Centennial, Colo.

36. TriHealth lays off 69 employees
Cincinnati-based TriHealth is restructuring its operations. As part of the process, 69 human resources, IT, finance and corporate administration positions were cut.

37. NYC Health + Hospitals lays off 70 employees
NYC Health + Hospitals cut 70 managerial level, nonclinical positions.

38. Zenefits to lay off 45% of its workforce
Zenefits, a health insurance and human resources startup based in San Francisco, announced plans to lay off 430 employees, or about 45 percent of its workforce.

39. Humana to lay off about 500 workers
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana announced plans to lay off about 500 workers by April 3, as it scales back its home health division's workforce.

40. Eastern Connecticut Health Network loses about 20 employees
Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings, the new for-profit owner of Manchester-based Eastern Connecticut Health Network, laid off about 20 employees at the network. Facilities affected by the layoffs include Manchester (Conn.) Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital in Vernon, Conn.

41. Rackspace lays off nearly 300 amid shift to private company
Rackspace, a cloud hosting company based in San Antonio, cut 276 jobs, or about 6 percent of its U.S. workforce.

42. Schumacher Clinical Partners to lay off 125 as it consolidates operations
Lafayette, La.-based Schumacher Clinical Partners, a physician staffing, consulting and medical billing company, announced plans to lay off 125 employees at one of its subsidiary's offices in Fort Myers, Fla.

43. Texas hospital shutters sexual assault forensic unit as part of layoffs
Mission (Texas) Regional Medical Center closed its sexual assault forensic unit, or SAFE Place. The closure was part of 40 layoffs that took place at the hospital.

44. Long Beach hospitals lay off 130 employees amid financial challenges
Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial and its two sister hospitals in Long Beach laid off 130 employees, or less than 3 percent of staffing.

45. Memorial Hermann to cut workforce by 112
Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System in January announced plans to lay off 112 employees, or less than 1 percent of its 25,000-employee workforce.

46. Theranos lays off 40% of workforce
Palo Alto, Calif.-based blood testing startup Theranos laid off 155 employees

47. CHI St. Alexius cuts workforce by 2.7% amid rising costs
CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, N.D., laid off 52 employees, or 2.7 percent of its total workforce.

48. MD Anderson to cut about 1,000 jobs
In January the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston announced plans to eliminate about 1,000 jobs, or 5 percent of its 20,000-person workforce, as it tries to improve its financial health.
