Shenandoah Medical Center cuts 14 positions

Shenandoah (Iowa) Medical Center laid off employees amid restructuring efforts, according to a KMA News report.

In a statement, hospital CEO Karen Cole attributed the layoffs to Medicaid reimbursement changes and an uncertain healthcare climate, according to KMA News.

"As many people are aware, the healthcare industry at the national and state level, we're all going through a number of changes. Like all organizations, we monitor and evaluate these changes so that we can best position ourselvesfor the future. Today, this includes a reduction in force," she said in the statement.

Overall, SMC cut 14 jobs. Seven employees affected by the cuts were offered another open position at the hospital, according to Ms. Cole. She said another 13 employees will see reduced hours, KMA News reports. "But of those 13, eight of those have been our part-time shuttle drivers or ambassadors who will remain on staff in a PRN status with us, to be here and be available as needed," Ms. Cole added.

While the hospital has reduced its workforce, it has not instituted a hiring freeze, the report notes.
