17 latest hospital, health system executive moves

The following hospital and health system executive moves were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last week. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. David L. Bernd, CEO of Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare, will retire March 3, 2016, bringing to a close a 43-year career with 21 years at the helm. Upon Mr. Bernd's retirement, Howard P. Kern, the current president and COO of Sentara, will take over the role of CEO.

2. Gino Patrizio, COO of Marysville, Calif.-based Rideout Health, will be promoted to CEO this fall.  

3. Michael Robinson, who oversees three Bon Secours Richmond (Va.) Health System hospitals, is stepping down next month.

4. Gary Gray, DO, was appointed CEO of Salinas, Calif.-based Natividad Medical Center, effective Sept. 15.

5. Oswego (N.Y.) Health appointed Charles "Chuck" Gijanto president and CEO, effective Sept. 14.

6. Los Altos, Calif.-based Daughters of Charity Health System named John Ferrelli president and CEO of its Seton Medical Center in Daly City, Calif.

7. Phoenix-based Banner Health named Shelby Nelson CEO of its southern Wyoming operations.

8. Anthony Stahl was named CEO of San Marcos, Texas-based Central Texas Medical Center, effective Oct. 5.

9. Daniel F. Evans Jr., president and CEO of Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health, plans to retire. Mr. Evans will relinquish his role as president but will continue to serve as the statewide health system's CEO until May 1, 2016. Current IU Health executive vice president and COO Dennis M. Murphy will be promoted to president of the organization, effective immediately, and take over as CEO on May 1, 2016.

10. Kenneth Gibbs, chairman of the board of trustees at Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides Medical Center, will become president and CEO of the hospital.

11. Dean French, MD, CEO of Sierra Vista, Ariz.-based Canyon Vista Medical Center, is leaving his position to become CEO of Community Medical Center in Missoula, Mont.

12. Ikenna "Ike" Mmeje was named CEO of Doctors Hospital of Manteca (Calif.).

13. Rand Wortman, president and CEO of Richland, Wash.-based Kadlec Health System, plans to retire in May 2016.

14. Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) Medical Center, part of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare's Florida region, named Teresa C. Urquhart COO.

15. Jeff VanHorn, CEO of Mountain Valley Regional Hospital in Casper, Wyo., resigned.

16. Jacksonville, Fla.-based St. Vincent's HealthCare named Michael Schatzlein, MD, CEO, effective Sept. 8.

17. Phoenix-based Banner Health named new CFOs to serve at four of its Arizona campuses. Derek Lythgoe will serve Banner Baywood Medical Center and Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa; Cheryl Tong will serve Banner Desert Medical Center and Cardon Children's Medical Center in Mesa.; Thomas Matenaer will serve Banner Gateway Medical Center and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert.; and Darcy Robertson will serve Banner Payson Medical Center.
