The legislation, signed March 18, allows physician assistants to provide prescriptions for all types of medications, gives them legal protections similar to other healthcare professionals and the ability to be reimbursed by Medicaid, among other changes.
The governor said she signed the law keeping in mind the strain the state’s healthcare system will face amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Enabling physician assistants to better serve the healthcare needs of Iowans will result in better care in a more timely fashion,” she said. “As the state continues to combat the spread of COVID-19 and the strains it will place on our healthcare system, this will be yet another tool in our arsenal.”
