Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital. Tampa General Hospital was known as Tampa Municipal Hospital when it opened alongside the Gordon Keller School of Nursing in 1927. The original hospital had 186 beds.
Tampa General Hospital is now a 1,011-bed nonprofit institution with a medical staff of 1,312. It serves a dozen counties for a patient population of more than 4 million. With 7,300 employees, it is one of the largest employers in the region. A Magnet-designated hospital, Tampa General is the primary teaching affiliate of USF Health Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. More than 300 residents are assigned to Tampa General for specialty training.
In 2015-16, U.S. News & World Report ranked Tampa General the No. 3 hospital in Florida and nationally ranked six of the hospital’s specialties. Tampa General is the area’s only Level I trauma center and home to one of three burn centers in Florida. Physicians have performed more than 6,000 solid organ transplants at Tampa General’s organ transplant center, including Florida’s first successful heart transplant in 1985.
