AtlantiCare in New Jersey, Heartland Health in Missiouri Win Baldrige Awards

AtlantiCare in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., and Heartland Health in St. Joseph, Mo., were the two hospital systems among five 2009 Baldrige National Quality Award winners, according to a release from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which sponsors the Baldrige program.

AtlantiCare’s accomplishments include:

  • increased market share to 62 percent in its primary service area during the second quarter 2008 and by 57 percent in its regional service area from 2000-2009;
  • logged an 11 percent compound annual growth rate from 2000-2008; and
  • ranked seventh out of 4,200 hospitals in 2006 by the Commonwealth Fund for clinical results in care of patients.

Heartland Health’s accomplishments include:

  • exceeded Moody’s and Fitch current bond rating requirements for days cash on hand and achieved performance in both rating agencies’ top 10 percent for total margin and operating margin in FY 2009;
  • achieved 90 percent ratings in overall outpatient satisfaction and in key drivers of outpatient satisfaction from 2006-2009; and
  • achieved the 90th percentile in NCQA’s ratings for healthcare and specialty care in its health plan.

Recipients were selected from among 70 applicants in a variety of industries. They were evaluated in seven areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, workforce focus, process management, results and measurement, and analysis & knowledge management.
