On-Site Radiology Groups May Benefit Hospitals More Than Teleradiologists

On-site radiology groups provide hospitals value-added services that may not be realized with other specialists or teleradiologists in remote locations, according to commentary published in Journal of the American College of Radiology.

The authors said on-site radiologists add value to the hospital in six areas:

1. Patient safety
2. Image quality
3. Interpretation quality
4. Service to patients and referring physicians
5. Cost containment
6. Hospital business growth

“If the hospital allows its radiology department to become fragmented by the intrusion of other specialists or teleradiology companies in remote locations, most of these added values would be lost, and chaos could ensue,” the authors wrote.
