Stony Brook University Hospital Turns Down PPACA Health Plans

Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital has become the second major hospital in New York this week to say it will not accept any health plans from the state's health insurance exchange, according to a Newsday report.

Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO of SBUH, told Newsday the 603-bed academic medical center is still negotiating with health insurers with plans on the exchanges, but as of right now, it will not accept the plans due to low reimbursement rates. He said the offered rates are lower than Medicare and "approaching Medicaid."

Gary Bie, CFO of SBUH, said the hospital still accepts other employer-based commercial plans, as well as Medicare and Medicaid.

Earlier this week, Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., similarly said it will not accept New York exchange health plans due to poor reimbursement rates. The exchanges are a cornerstone provision under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
