1 in 5 medical residents have more than $300K in school debt

Although 23 percent of residents have no medical school debt, the same percentage has to pay back debt of more than $300,000, according to Medscape‘s Residents Salary & Debt Report.

Medscape invited U.S. medical residents to take an online survey about their salaries and debts, and 1,916 of them responded.

The list below shows the amount of med school debt next to the percentage of residents carrying it:

1. Over $300,000 — 23 percent
2. $200,001 to $300,000 — 24 percent
3. $100,001 to $200,000 — 16 percent
4. $50,001 to $100,000 — 6 percent
5. Under $50,000 — 8 percent
6. None — 23 percent
