Approximately half of high-use inpatients are also high-cost, incurring more than $65,000 in hospital charges per average visit, according to an article published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Researchers tracked costs associated with individuals admitted to an academic health system at least once between 2010 and 2011.

In contrast with high-cost, low-use patients; high-cost, high-use patients were more likely to have shorter stays but were also more likely to be readmitted within 30 days.

Distinguishing between types of high users has the potential to assist with interventions and cost savings, according to the study authors.
