Scope of practice expands for Tennessee pharmacists

In early May, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill into law that expands pharmacists’ scope of practice.

Tennessee pharmacists can now prescribe flu and COVID-19 antivirals after a positive test, flu and COVID-19 vaccines for pediatric patients, all immunizations for adults, epinephrine auto-injectors for patients who have allergies, progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives, and a handful of other medications.

Instead of requiring a formal collaborative pharmacy practice agreement, pharmacists can now independently prescribe some medicines.

“This law adds to the definition of pharmacy practice,” the Tennessee Pharmacists Association said in a May 6 news release

The law went into effect May 1.
