How CVS, Walgreens and Walmart health-focused stores compare

CVS Health, Walgreens and Walmart all have announced plans to invest more in face-to-face healthcare.

A breakdown of how their health-focused stores compare:

Walmart Health

1. Walmart opened a stand-alone health clinic in Dallas, Ga., Sept. 13.

2. The 10,000-square-foot health clinic, called Walmart Health, offers primary care, imaging, lab, dental and behavioral health services.

3. Walmart plans to offer visits, cleanings and lab tests at prices about 30 percent to 50 percent lower than what people are currently paying at physician offices and other retail health clinics in the state. Walmart Health will take insurance.

4. The primary care clinic in Dallas, Ga., is different from the other 19 Care Clinics Walmart  operates in Georgia, South Carolina and Texas that are smaller and located inside Walmart stores.

5. Walmart plans to open another Walmart Health center in Calhoun, Ga., early next year. If the pilot Walmart Health clinics succeed, Walmart would expand them nationwide and quickly become the nation's largest provider of basic healthcare.

CVS' HealthHubs

1. CVS first opened three redesigned health-focused stores in the Houston market. The retail pharmacy giant now plans to open 1,500 more HealthHubs by the end of 2021.

2. The stores dedicate space to help consumers manage such chronic conditions as hypertension, diabetes and asthma and provide more care coordination between CVS pharmacies, walk-in clinics and other services.

3. In the new health-focused stores, CVS' MinuteClinics offer expanded services, including a lab for blood testing and health screenings. The new stores have dieticians and respiratory specialists on staff to help patients manage chronic diseases.

4. HealthHubs also have wellness rooms equipped for yoga classes and seminars. The new stores also sell more medical products, including sleep apnea masks and walkers.

5. Each HealthHub store has a "care concierge" to help guide customers through new health services. Electronic tablets are available for customers to browse health and wellness apps and shop on the CVS website.

Walgreens' health-centric stores

1. Walgreens renovated a store near its headquarters in Deerfield, Ill., in the summer of 2018. The pilot store combines in one location many of the new healthcare concepts Walgreens is testing across the country. Those health services include hearing screenings, eye exams and lab tests.

2. Walgreens also has been striking partnerships with grocery stores, health insurers and tech companies to make better use of the company's footprint.

3. Through a partnership with Microsoft, Walgreens is testing "digital health corners" intended to help customers with chronic health issues manage them more effectively.

4. Walgreens also employs "health guides" to help customers find medications in store aisles and book appointments with its health clinic.

5. Walgreens has partnered with LabCorp to offer a handful of services, including blood work and drug tests, in stores. Last October, Walgreens announced it would expand its partnership with LabCorp to 600 more locations.

6. Walgreens also partnered with Starkey, a hearing aid manufacturer. Starkey helps perform hearing tests and  fit patients for hearing aids at nine Walgreens locations.
