Centene's East Coast headquarters: 6 updates

Centene Corp. is nearing the completion of the first of two construction phases for its East Coast headquarters, set to be initially operational in 2022. The insurer shared additional details on the planned Charlotte, N.C.-based facility during its June 21 dedication.

Six things to know:

1. The first phase of construction includes nine floors and 800,000 square feet of office and meeting spaces. Centene anticipates bringing in 3,000 employees following its completion, with another 3,000 joining after the second phase is completed.

2. Michael Neidorff, chairman, president and CEO of Centene, said the company intends to invest $1 billion in the Charlotte area with the construction and development of the headquarters.

3. Mr. Neidorff said in a statement that he wanted the facility to serve as a "model for the future of hybrid collaboration and engagement."

4. The East Coast headquarters is focusing on technology and innovation. The campus will include childcare facilities, a healthcare clinic and pharmacy, solar electric car charging stations and a corporate learning center.

5. So far, Centene has hired 700 employees from North Carolina over the past year as construction ramps up. Prior to that, the company had 600 employees in North Carolina.

6. Centene initially announced its Charlotte facility plans in July 2020. The new headquarters comes as Centene mulls its future in St. Louis, home to its first headquarters.
