Aggressive patient forces emergency landing of Shands Hospital helicopter

A medical transport helicopter made an emergency landing in Belleview, Fla., Wednesday morning due to an unruly patient on board, reports Ocala Star-Banner.

The ShandsCair helicopter was transporting a 66-year-old man to University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. However, the pilot landed the helicopter in Belleview after the patient began to act out against the two medics on board and grabbed for medical equipment inside the aircraft.

The patient allegedly punched one medic and hit the other after landing, according to a sheriff's deputy report. When the deputy arrived at the scene, the patient was calm. Marion County Fire Rescue officials transported the patient to Ocala (Fla.) Regional Medical Center, with accompaniment from the ShandsCair team.
