Free Sacramento health clinic clocks 1.5k patient visits in one weekend

California CareForce's free health clinic in Sacramento saw 1,500 patients over the weekend, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Over the weekend, medical staff from across the state volunteered to provide medical, vision and dental care to the uninsured and under insured. The volunteers offered teeth cleanings, eye exams, physical exams, flu shots and acupuncture, according to the report.

Of the 1,500 patients who received care at the free clinic this weekend, approximately 50 percent had no insurance, 20 percent said their insurance didn't cover their needs and 10 percent were insured but could not afford their deductibles.

"[The patients are] everyday people who are coming here because of that lack of access to care. There are cracks in the health care system, but with our volunteers we can help fill some of those cracks," Tom Burley, the program manager for California CareForce, told the Sacramento Bee.

California CareForce plans to open another free medical clinic in 2018, though a date and location have not been set.
