Researchers analyzed data from the 55 poison control centers in the U.S. They included children younger than 19 years who ingested opioids between Jan. 1, 2005 and Dec. 31, 2018.
Children were involved in 27.54 percent of a total of 1 million opioid-poisoning cases reported to the poison centers. Fentanyl, heroin and methadone were the opioids most associated with receiving care in the pediatric intensive care unit.
