5 chief nursing officers who became CEOs, COOs in 2023

Several nurse executives at hospitals nationwide have been promoted from one C-suite title to another since the start of 2023. 

Below is a list of five nurse executive promotions since the start of the year. The list is not exhaustive and is listed in alphabetical order. 

  1. Jenny Hardee, BSN, former CNO at McLeod Health Darlington (S.C.), was named CEO of McLeod Health Dillon (S.C.).
  1. Valarie McPherson, DNP, RN, was appointed to a dual role at Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, N.J., as its chief nursing officer and chief operating officer.  
  1. Maralyn Militello, BSN, RN, was promoted from chief nursing officer to CEO of Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, N.Y.  
  1. Rozanna Penney, CRNA, chief nursing officer and COO, vice president of patient care services and executive director of Heywood Medical Group, was named co-CEO of Gardner, Mass.-based Heywood Healthcare as part of a new leadership structure. 

  2. Michelle Romano, MSN, RN, was promoted to a dual role as the chief nursing officer and chief operating officer for Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich.
