Humana's Acquisition of HIE Vendor Part of Emerging Transaction Trend

Humana, a health insurance provider, recently acquired Certify Data Systems, a health information exchange technology company, exhibiting a trend of health plans acquiring HIE vendors to gain more access and control over clinical data.

The terms of the Humana and Certify Data acquisition were not disclosed.

According to an InformationWeek report, Humana is the third health plan to acquire a health information exchange vendor. Aetna bought Medicity, and Ingenix, a unit of United Health Group, acquired Axolotl. According to the report, United was interested in Axolotl to support its partners with accountable care organizations, while Aetna and Humana view their acquisitions as a means for clout with physician practice patterns.

"The acquisition of Certify Data Systems can help us create a unique and simplistic consumer experience by connecting providers, members and Humana," said Paul Kusserow, Humana's chief strategy and corporate development officer, in the press release. "By integrating Certify's [HIE] technology into our infrastructure, Humana can help accelerate the sharing of electronic health records among physicians, which can lead to reductions in gaps in care."
