Former Goldman Sachs CIO joins Memorial Sloan Kettering spinoff: 4 things to know

R. Martin Chavez, PhD, a former Goldman Sachs executive who left the investment bank at the end of 2019, has joined the board of directors of Paige, a startup developing artificial intelligence for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Here are four things to know about the appointment:

1. Dr. Chavez spent nearly two decades at Goldman Sachs, during which he served as CIO, CFO and, most recently, co-head of training. Since his departure, he has remained a senior director of the firm.

2. Dr. Chavez has experience in both healthcare and the startup world: He received his PhD in medical information sciences from Stanford (Calif.) University in 1990 and co-founded two software startups, Kiodex and Quorum Software Systems.

3. Paige, which recently closed a $45 million Series B funding round, was founded by researchers at New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The startup's platform offers AI-driven diagnostics for more accurate and lower-cost cancer diagnosis and treatment.

4. At Paige, Dr. Chavez is expected to lead the data-driven transformation of healthcare, much as he introduced a new era of engineering and data science within the financial sector during his time at Goldman Sachs, according to Paige CEO Leo Grady, PhD.

"I'm thrilled at the opportunity to put my experience at the crossroads of math, data, software and machine learning to work for the crucial mission of revolutionizing cancer prognosis and treatment," Dr. Chavez said in a Jan. 10 news release emailed to Becker's Hospital Review. "I'm looking forward to joining Paige's team in driving forward computational models for human tissue, while building a world-class culture of engineering, data science and clinical decision analysis."
