Michigan legislation with mandatory overtime limits for nurses gains momentum: 6 things to know

Proposed Michigan legislation that would set statutory limits for nurses' hours and workloads is moving forward, according to a Lansing State Journal report.

Here are six things to know.

1. The legislation is covered in House Bills 4629, 4630 and 4631.

2. Under these House bills collectively, mandatory overtime for nurses would be barred in most instances, and nurse-to-patient ratios would be mandated for hospitals, among other provisions, according to the report.

3. The Lansing State Journal states these issues have come up various times before in proposed legislation, but for the first time the House Health Policy Committee heard testimony.

4. Additionally, the legislation has dozens of co-sponsors, and the previously opposed Michigan Chamber of Commerce has now taken a "neutral" position, according to the report.

5. The legislation has supporters and dretractors. Proponents, for instance, argue it would bring about needed statewide data collection on nurse overtime and patient ratios, while opponents advocate for flexibility so hospitals can address their own specific needs, according to the Lansing State Journal.

6. The report states lawmakers in the state Senate also have pending legislation.
