Gianrico Farrugia, MD, president and CEO of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, plans to complete his tenure at the end of 2026.
Dr. Farrugia has served as president and CEO since January 2019, according to a May 12 health system news release. He has led the system through a period of strategic growth while navigating external changes, the release said.
Dr. Farrugia leads the system’s 85,000-person global workforce, which each year cares for patients from all 50 states, as well as more than 135 countries.
Under Dr. Farrugia’s leadership, the system created Mayo Clinic Platform, its first AI-enabled care transformation platform, and accelerated the discovery, translation and delivery of more cures for chronic and acute diseases.
He has spent more than 35 years as a Mayo Clinic physician and is a practicing gastroenterologist. Before stepping into his current role, he became CEO of Jacksonville-based Mayo Clinic in Florida in 2015 and co-founded the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation.
Prior to the start of his first CEO role, Dr. Farrugia was director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine from 2011 to 2014, and has served as director of Mayo Clinic’s enteric neuroscience program since 2004. He has also served as professor of physiology and professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, also in Rochester.

The system’s board anticipates electing its next president and CEO in November to allow for a coordinated transition Jan. 1.
