Here are three things to know about the proposed affiliation.

1. The governing boards of both health systems approved a nonbinding memorandum of understanding, which serves as a framework for a definitive agreement and outlines the goals related to the organizations’ proposed affiliation.

2. Under the proposed deal, Summit Health will integrate with WellSpan. Officials said the next step in the process is to formalize a definitive agreement.

3. Summit Health and WellSpan have previously engaged in a number of collaborations, including as members of the Central Pennsylvania Alliance Laboratory, a regional reference lab, and Quest Behavioral Health, a behavioral managed care group.
