As part of Operation Hackensack Strategic Medical Asset Readiness Training, Army Reserve soldiers will engage with physicians and surgeons at Hackensack Meridian Medical Center through a 14-day immersion program. The partnership aims to allow military medical personnel and physicians to collaborate on best practices and techniques using the most up-to-date technology, according to an emailed news release.

Officials told Becker’s Hospital Review in an interview the partnership resulted from conversations between representatives from both institutions.

The program will be open to all Army Reserve medical command units, but will mainly consist of laboratory specialists, radiology specialists and operating room technicians. Those involved will partner with Hackensack physicians in the emergency department, operating rooms, inpatient and outpatient arenas and clinical laboratories.

The inaugural class of 12 Army Reserve participants and two active Air Force personnel will begin their first rotation at the medical center June 5. Rotations will continue into 2018. Officials told Becker’s Hospital Review the pilot program will take place at the medical center, but will hopefully roll out across the entire health system.

In addition to creating Operation Hackensack SMART, Hackensack Meridian Health signed a statement of support with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an office within the U.S. Department of Defense that develops and maintains employer support for the Guard and Reserve services.
