Community Group Files Complaint With Arizona AG Over Hospital Affiliation

A community group has filed a complaint with Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard alleging the affiliation of Sierra Vista (Ariz.) Regional Health Center with Tucson-based Carondelet Health Network violated a state regulation for non-profit entities, according to a Sierra Vista Herald report.

The community group, the Cochise Citizens for Patients’ Rights, claim that the affiliation of SVRHC with Catholic Carondelet violated the state’s Trust code, which protects beneficiaries of non-profit institutions from actions made by the board that weaken or change the institution’s charitable mission.

After SVRHC joined Carondelet in April, certain reproductive services — such as tubal ligations — were no longer offered at the facility, which now follows Catholic health doctrine.

The affiliation agreement is evaluated every quarter and is effective for two years, at which point SVRHC will consider a full merger, according to the report.
