Civic organization sues FEMA over plan for shuttered New York hospital

The Long Beach NY Beach to Bay Civic Association filed a civil rights lawsuit July 6 against the Federal Emergency Management Agency alleging the agency approved a plan that fails to restore the shuttered Long Beach (N.Y.) Medical Center, according to LiHerald.com.

Long Beach Medical Center was damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and forced to close. Oceanside, N.Y.-based South Nassau Communities Hospital purchased the bankrupt medical center in 2014.

Shortly after acquiring the hospital, SNCH received $154 million in FEMA funds to restore the facility. However, SNCH officials will reportedly use a portion of the funds to construct a medical pavilion with an emergency department at the former Long Beach Medical Center facility and a second portion to fund the expansion of its Oceanside campus, according to the report.

SNCH officials said building a full-service hospital in Long Beach “does not make fiscal sense and … would hemorrhage … about $10 million a year,” according to an independent study commissioned by the SNCH and cited by News-12 Long Beach.

A representative from the civic organization said during a community meeting July 24 SNCH “stands to actually make a profit of about $1.5 million annually,” News-12 reports.

SNCH officials will hold a second meeting July 25.
