Three South Carolina Hospitals Move Forward With Plan to Form Tri-County Health System

Bamberg (S.C.) County Hospital, Barnwell (S.C.) County Hospital and Allendale County Hospital in Fairfax, S.C., are moving forward with plans to come together to form Tri-County Regional Health System, according to a Times and Democrat report.

Bamberg County Council approved a resolution that would allow it to enter into an agreement with the other hospitals for a "regional health park," with revenues and expenses split evenly between the three counties, according to the report.

The plan for the regional health park was included in a proposal offered by Philadelphia-based Health Care Management Partners, one of two companies to submit plans to help develop a regional system for the counties. The Bamberg County Council also approved a resolution that would allow a subcommittee chairman to enter into a letter of intent with HCMP.

HCMP has proposed the development of a 70- to 80-bed regional hospital under the umbrella of a newly formed Tri-County Regional Health System, according to the report.

If the systems select this proposal, Bamberg County Hospital would consolidate with Barnwell, ceasing operations, after the transaction closes. Barnwell and Allendale would remain in operation until the new regional facility opens, at which point they would be converted in ambulatory centers.

Allendale and Barnwell Counties will consider similar resolutions in the next few weeks, according to the report.
