Kansas' Wesley Medical Center Buys Physician-Owned Heart Hospital

Wesley Medical Center, a Hospital Corporation of America facility in Wichita, Kan., has entered into an agreement to buy the physician-owned Galichia Heart Hospital, according to a Wichita Business Journal report.

The deal will occur within the next three months. Galichia, an 82-bed hospital in Wichita, is led by a 23-member physician group. The 862-bed Wesley is the second-largest acute-care hospital in the city.

While Galichia and Wesley executives say the deal has been in the works for weeks, others say the merger was spurred by the healthcare reform law, which restricts physician-owned hospitals from expansion, according to the report.
