The Texas Attorney General’s Office has opened a civil investigation into the emergency department procedures and billing at Community Health Systems’ hospitals in the state , according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Currently, the attorney general has issued civil investigative demands for CHS hospitals in Abilene and San Angelo after entering an agreement with the system to only send CIDs for two facilities rather than all 18 in the state for the time being.

The CIDs requested data on billing and the provision of medical services from Jan. 1, 2004, through the time the demands were issued. The demands stated the attorney general is probing “misrepresentation and/or unlawful acts” related to the treatment of Medicaid recipients, according to the report.

In its filing, CHS said it is cooperating fully with the requests and is unable to evaluate the outcome of the investigation since it is in the early stages. A CHS spokeswoman said the company had no comment beyond the disclosure, according to the report.
