University of Maryland Medical Center names new CEO: 5 things to know

Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical Center has named Mohan Suntha, MD, president and CEO, effective Sept. 1.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Suntha.

1. He has more than two decades of medical and administrative experience within Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System.

2. Currently, he is president and CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, a role in which he has served since 2012. Thomas Smyth, MD, who joined UM SJMC last year as medical director of the UM St. Joseph Medical Group, will take over as president and CEO of UM SJMC upon Dr. Suntha's departure. 

3. Prior to joining UM SJMC, Dr. Suntha was UMMS vice president for system program development.

4. In his new role as president and CEO of UMMC, Dr. Suntha will be involved with various strategic priorities, including working with hospital and community-based programs to improve access to preventive care, manage chronic illness and promote workforce development, UMMC said.  

5. Dr. Suntha earned a medical degree from Philadelphia-based Jefferson Medical College, now the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, also in Philadelphia.
