Society of General Internal Medicine names Dr. Gisele Corbie-Smith president: 5 takeaways

The Society of General Internal Medicine elected Gisele Corbie-Smith, MD, to serve as its 41st president.

1. Dr. Corbie-Smith is a Kenan Distinguished Professor as well as professor of medicine and social medicine at Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

2. She also serves as director of the UNC Center of Health Equity Research.

3. She will serve as president of the Society of General Internal Medicine for a one-year term but will serve on its council as an officer for three years.

4. The society also named Karen DeSalvo, MD, president-elect. Dr. DeSalvo, the former HHS acting secretary, is currently a professor of internal medicine and population health at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.

5. Mitch Feldman, MD, is the society’s new secretary-elect. He is division chief of general internal medicine and associate vice provost, faculty mentoring at UC San Francisco.
