Oklahoma City-based OU Health has appointed Azeemuddin Ahmed, MD, as clinical service chief of emergency medicine and founding chair of the newly created department of emergency medicine at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He will begin the role Aug. 18.

Dr. Ahmed’s appointment comes as OU Health integrates emergency physicians into its employed clinical workforce for the first time and reestablishes emergency medicine training in Oklahoma City after a 30-year gap. The new department, approved by the OU Board of Regents in late 2024, is part of a broader effort to expand the physician workforce and improve access to emergency care across Oklahoma, according to a March 31 news release.

Dr. Ahmed joins OU Health from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where he was executive vice chair of emergency medicine and held multiple leadership roles in EMS and trauma services at both state and campus levels.

At OU Health, he will oversee clinical strategy, residency training, and research, with a focus on building out disaster response capabilities and modernizing emergency care statewide.
