Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s has reorganized into a regional operating structure to address growing healthcare demands across South Florida.
Here are four things to know:
1. The new structure divides the health system into three markets, according to a Dec. 17 news release: the South Market, including the Miami campus and outpatient centers; the North Market, which includes inpatient services at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health and outpatient facilities in Broward County; and Developing Markets, covering Palm Beach and Collier counties.
2. As part of the changes, Yair Katz has joined the system as president of the Broward market, and Ariana Urquia has been promoted to president of the Miami-Dade market. Both executives will report to Marcos Mestre, MD, senior vice president and chief clinical officer, and oversee operations and strategy in their respective regions.
3. Saima Aftab, MD, will continue in her role as senior vice president and chief strategy officer while also serving as president of network services. In her expanded role, she will work directly with President and CEO Matthew Love to grow services in emerging markets and expand partnerships across South Florida.
4. Mr. Katz brings more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience, most recently serving as chief executive of Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach in California. Ms. Urquia, a long-standing leader within the system, most recently served as vice president and CFO for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
“Our regional structure model will allow us to be more nimble and responsive to the evolving needs of the communities we serve,” Mr. Love said in the release. “Through this new structure, we are ensuring that our mission to inspire hope and promote lifelong health is supported by local insights, strong partnerships and the highest standards of pediatric care.”
Nicklaus Children’s includes a 325-bed pediatric hospital and nearly 35 outpatient locations, serving close to 70% of children in the Miami metropolitan area.
